Louisa Schmetterling has just arrived in America. She’s a German freedom fighter, who has to come stay with a minister’s family to await the end of the war. Because of the anti-Nazi activities she was involved in while in Germany, her life was in danger. Her plan is to bide her time in America until she can return to the country she loves.

The family she is living with in America - Reverend Robert Gordon, his son, William and fussy Aunt Martha - worm their way into Louisa’s heart. As she works with William, who is deaf, to teach him oral communication, she finds herself becoming attached, which is something she was hoping to avoid.

When Louisa is discovered by a local Nazi sympathizer, she must once again run for her life. How can she protect the family she’s come to adore? Will she be able to leave them behind to complete the mission in Germany that she believes God has called her to?

This debut novel from Suzanne Woods Fisher is a beautiful picture of love and hope amidst the terror of WWII. Readers get a taste of what life was like during this tumultuous time in history. My one complaint? We never do learn Louisa’s real name. Readers will enjoy this book and look forward to more from this new author — and rumor has it that we may learn her name in the upcoming sequel.
