I’ve loved Amy Grant since I was a little girl. Almost every birthday and Christmas I would receive one of her cassette tapes (remember those?!). I think I knew the words to every song. So, when I saw her new book, Mosaic, I knew I wanted to read it. I’m glad I did.
The book is a combination of song lyrics and Grant’s thoughts from the time periods when each song was written. Some of the lyrics are from old songs, which brought back a lot of great memories for me about dancing around my room to her music as a young teenager. It was interesting to read about what was happening in Grant’s life and I remembered back to what was going on in my own young life at the time. The book also includes lyrics to new songs and gives us a glimpse at where Grant is in life now.
Mosaic is written journal-style, with Grant opening up and sharing her experiences and feelings with the reader. I was particularly touched by a story she shares about stopping by an elderly lady’s house on her birthday with her husband, Vince Gill. It’s amazing to think that Grant and Gill would take the time from their busy schedules to do something like this, and yet Grant shares how much she learned from spending time with the woman. It reminded me that God uses every situation in our life in some way – not a moment is wasted.
Grant also shares how she’s a “normal” person, just like the rest of us. “Like everybody else, I wish I were in better shape or had planned an upcoming event little more thoroughly. I wish I were neater. I wish I weighed what I weighed when I was in the thirties. But all those things are for another day. This day—at a hundred and forty-five pounds, at forty-six years old, with a few gray hairs and not quite enough sleep—this is the day the Lord has made. I will rejoice and be glad in it.” p. 144.
Readers who have been following Grant’s career for decades will learn from this intimate look into her life; those who may not have been longtime fans will certainly find a woman who they can respect and admire. Her honesty and openness are refreshing and make the book well worth the time.
A little about the author: Amy Grant is the best-selling Christian music artist of all time and the first to garner the number one spot on Billboard’s chart. Since beginning her career at age 17, she has earned six Grammy Awards and twenty-five Dove Awards, and last year she received her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Grant’s numerous television appearances include Oprah; Good Morning, America; and Late Night with David Letterman. In 2007 she’ll tour nationwide, performing with local symphonies in Atlanta, Minneapolis, Kansas City, and elsewhere.
