Nellie Mae Fisher lives in Honeybrook, an Amish community. Her family is grieving the loss of her younger sister, Suzy, who died in a boating accident. Many questions surround the death of Suzy and as those answers begin to surface Nellie hopes they will not get in the way of her future with Caleb Yoder who has just begun to court her.
The conflict in the Fisher family is mirrored in the community as many want to bring in long forbidden conveniences. The Old order is further pushed to the limits as revival visits the area and many of the people refuse to look only at passages of scripture approved by the bishop and begin to understand the fullness of the gospel of grace.
Although the rest of her family is embracing this new way of looking at scripture, Nellie tries to keep her distance in order to retain her relationship with Caleb. But as Nellie begins to find the answers to the questions surrounding Suzy’s death, she finds they are the same answers her family has discovered through the revival.
Although Caleb declares his love for Nellie Mae, his family will not allow him to marry someone who is not of the Old Order. He promises her that he will find a way for them.
The Parting is an enjoyable read and I am sure you will be waiting at the bookstore for the next book in the series to find out what happens to Caleb and Nellie Mae.
