Pure by Rebecca St. James is an inspiring devotional suitable for every believer. In this ninety day devotional, you will discover power of purity, the celebration of celibacy, and the awesomeness of abstinence.
The message Rebecca displays throughout this book, is one of attainable serenity for the mind, body, and spirit. Although it is not viewed favorably according to the standards of the secular, she makes it quite clear that she chooses a life of abstinence, because that is what her heavenly Father has called her to do: live a life of purity. She encourages young women to join her in her walk of celibacy.
We need more positive roles models like Rebecca St. James. She has demonstrated that she can be a celebrity and be celibate. In our society intimacy is valued with a price tag being sold to the highest bidder. Fortunately, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Pure takes you on a spiritual walk that is not only truthful, but filled with passion. Primped with bible verses, reflections, a deeper look, and how to apply to daily living, this is the book to have for those who are pursuing purity with passion.

Lies Young Women Believe by Leigh DeMoss and Dannah Gresh contains some powerful truths that hit me like a ton of bricks. As I came to the realization that some of the decisions I made throughout my life were based on deception and untruths, I found comfort in knowing that my daughter will not be subject to the same slave-like mentality. She will know the truth early on because of the newly discovered truth in my life.
I like to refer to this book as the “mind renewing training manual.” The exposure of lies that the women of my generation believe liberates the mind, heart, and the soul. John 8:32 KJV tells us that ye shall know the truth and the truth shall MAKE you free. It sounds like we don’t have a choice in the matter except to be free once the truth has been revealed.
This book gives twenty-five examples of some of the major lies that young women tend to believe. It also gives real life situations and circumstances of how these lies are affecting women throughout the nation. The authors have conducted research and gained valuable data that proves that the vast majority of us believe the same lies. Which brings me to my next point, how the enemy likes to isolate us in regards to our thinking. We have a tendency to think ‘we’re alone’ but in actuality we are not alone, we struggle in the same areas, with the same thought s and the same feelings. We are a sisterhood with the same heavenly Father and that is one truth that will remain as long as you believe.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in this YA series, It’s All About Us. This second book was more of the same - good, clean fun. (Also, check out my interview with Shelley here.)
This novel focuses on Gillian Chang, the loud roommate of Lissa Mansfield that we’re introduced to book one. Gillian is a tell-it-like-it-is kind of girl and her personality doesn’t always win her friends at the elite Spencer Academy where they live and attend school. Gillian is outspoken about many things, but especially about her faith which makes many of the other kids uncomfortable. Continue to read »

I was recently introduced to Group Publishing - they have some amazing products available for women! I have been very impressed with each and every item of theirs that I’ve seen - from devotions to women’s retreat materials to prayer helps, so I thought I’d share a few favorites:
The Sister Circle Handbook - The Sister Circle Handbook is a great companion to the four Sister Circle novels by Nancy Moser and Vonette Bright. Being a huge reading fan, I loved that these tie in with the Sister Circle novel series. What could be better than having my devotional time and my reading time merge?
Tickled Pink Prayer Devotion - How cute is this?! I had honestly never seen anything quite like this before. What a great idea to give to a bible study leader, secret “santa” or any friend needing a little spiritual encouragement.
Here’s how Group describes it: Tickled Pink prayer devotion is a multi-sensory devotion that uses five simple object lessons to inspire new hope and joy. The Tickled Pink Prayer Devotion box contains the lesson objects and a devotional guide. Tickled Pink is an instant boost in a box—and a mini-retreat women will treasure.
am so excited to share this book with you! Both my great-grandfather and great-grandmother (along with some aunts, uncles and a great-great grandfather) immigrated here from Sweden. They didn’t arrive together, but met here and then brought more family over as they could.
I am so thankful to Lynn Austin for writing this story and giving a voice to these immigrants and giving us a glimpse into what life was like for them.
Life in Sweden seems like an endless winter for three sisters after their mother’s and father’s suicide. Ellin feels the weight of responsibility for her sisters’ welfare and when it circumstances become unbearable, she writes to her relatives in Chicago, pleading for help.
Joining sixteen million other immigrants who left their homelands for America between 1890 and 1920, Ellin, Kirsten, and Sophia begin the long, difficult journey. Enduring the ocean voyage in steerage and detention on Ellis Island, their story is America’s story. And in a journey fraught with hardships, each woman will come to understand her secret longings and the meaning of home.
I love Ginger Garrett and actually had the chance to interview her not long ago (listen here). Her newest novel, In The Shadow of Lions, is a little bit of a departure from her other novels in that she writes about two women whose lives intertwine. Anne Boleyn, whose life has recently been portrayed on the big screen in the movie, The Other Boleyn Girl, is one of this books main characters. We have the chance to see her from another side - that of her faith and how she uses her influence with King Henry to change the history of the church in England.
The other woman, Rose, is a broken woman who finds safety and security in the home of Thomas More when she is employed as his children’s governess. As she see Thomas More’s faith lived out in the form of charity and kindness, she’s drawn to the Lord. When she discovers a secret book that More is bent on destroying, she must make a most difficult choice.
This same book weaves itself through history and readers get to see how it affects the lives of these women and many throughout the centuries.
I love Christmas. I love the lights, the tree, even the hustle and bustle. But, one of my most favorite things about Christmas is treating myself to a cup of cocoa and a good Christmas story. Some years I’m drawn back to the old standbys like A Christmas Carol or even How The Grinch Stole Christmas. But, this year I have two new Christmas favorites.
The first book, Engaging Father Christmas, is actually the second book in a series by Robin Jones Gunn. (The first book is Finding Father Christmas - my last years favorite.)
Gunn’s novellas are cozy. Set in London, they have everything I need for a heartwarming Christmastime read - love, intrigue and, of course, a happy ending. The books each stand alone, but my recommendation would be to read them together. Continue to read »
