Max Jacobs is a man haunted by his past and tortured by his present. After spending time in battle zones around the world as a Navy Seal, he has returned home to his wife Sydney, and much strife in their marriage. With a temper that rages out of control, circumstances that don’t allow the two of them to work things out and her job as a journalist, they have the world stacked against them.

When an organization that doesn’t technically exist approaches Max with missions, he jumps at the idea. It’s a good chance for him to get away from the chaos of his crumbling marriage and the pain of his failure. He loves being part of an elite team and he’s excited about the prospect of putting himself to work with dangerous missions.

Sydney Jacobs is juggling her own issues as she tries to figure out what to do about her marriage to Max. She’s also a reporter on the trail of a group of men who seem to be in all of the most dangerous places rescuing innocent people. As she asks questions though, she finds herself deeply embroiled in a story that’s not only fascinating, but extremely dangerous. She discovers that people who don’t want to be found don’t like it when reporters ask a lot of questions.

Ronie Kendig’s first book in the Discarded Heroes series is a brilliant debut. Populated with handsome heroes and strong women wrapped in dizzying plot twists, this book takes you around the globe through political strife and brings it back home when Sydney and Max are working through their personal lives.

With a range of characters that will provide limitless opportunity for adventure and growth, Kendig’s new series promises to be one that can be enjoyed by men or women and has a little bit of something for everyone. Packed with adventure, romance, enough technical details to keep military buffs happy and the perfect amount of romance to tie it all together, this book is the perfect kick off to the new series.

Nightshade is a book that you will not want to miss. I’m eager to follow Kendig on this new journey she’s begun.
