When Deena Livingston inherits her grandfather’s mountain cabin in North Carolina, she expects to spend some time getting everything in order and enjoy a much-needed break from her life as a chef at an upscale restaurant in Atlanta. Hoping only to let her broken heart and body heal from the scars of an accident and broken engagement, Deena certainly doesn’t anticipate a surprise stipulation in her grandfather’s will. In order to inherit his cabin, Deena must spend six months teaching cooking classes in a local after school program in town.
She reluctantly agrees, but Deena’s confidence lags as she finds herself unsure of how to communicate with this mismatched group of middle school kids who seem too wise for their years and have emotional scars much deeper than her own. Add to the mix Zack, an attractive young social worker at The Center, and Deena may never be the same again.
Struggling to trust God to help her release her anger and allow forgiveness to heal her spirit, Deena comes to realize that she has more in common with these ragamuffin kids than she would have thought. And the ensuing love for these children her grandfather has “forced upon her,” as well as the man who seems determined to help her move forward, has a profound, lasting effect on Deena’s life. How Sweet It Is was the first book I have read by Alice Wisler, and I thoroughly enjoyed her style. The book is funny, entertaining, heartbreaking and more. It’s certainly one that made me think about how to handle issues with anger and forgiveness that we all face. In addition to the story itself, Ms. Wisler shares a few recipes in the book, which only add to the enjoyment. All in all, it was a great read and one I heartily recommend to others who enjoy a good romance and a story about learning and growing in God’s will for our lives.
