What makes great chick-lit? In my opinion, it’s an endearing character with a great sense of humor, or who is just a tad sarcastic, maybe even a bit “snarky,” as some would say. And, now that I am growing older, as are some chick-lit (mom-lit) heroines, I look for these same characters plus a toddler or two.
Claire Allan’s Rainy Days and Tuesdays has all this and more. I identified with the “chick” of the story, Grace, at every turn. She is a bit plump, a bit snarky, and a bit discontent with life in general. When one of Grace’s co-workers suggests that she undergo a make-over for a feature article in the magazine where they are editors, she is horrified at the thought. This, and trouble at home, set the stage for Grace’s mini-breakdown and hilarious rise back from the ashes.

I don’t know about you, but I’d love for my marriage to last a lifetime. Growing old and having a companion to share it all with — good and bad — is a wonderful thought. For the most part, Jane Green’s novel are funny, light-hearted looks at life through the eyes of women.
Green, who has written eight other novels,takes a more serious turn with in her newest novel, Second Chance. I was a little anxious about it, but I need not have worried. It’s deep, thought-provoking and the best Jane Green novel yet.
