God’s Good News by Billy Graham with illustrations by Scott Wakefield
Genre: children’s

Rated: G – it’s good for all ages

This is a beautiful book and I was looking forward to reading it with my toddler when the review copy arrived in the mail. It’s a hardbound book with sturdy pages and rich illustrations that help make the stories come alive for children. Accompanying each Bible story is a short devotional by Billy Graham with a question or action at the end for kids to think about.

A few caveats that I should mention –

  • This was not my toddler’s favorite story Bible. She’s three and a little too young for the applications and theology. I would recommend the book for ages 5+.
  • As mentioned, the illustrations are gorgeous but many of the Bible characters seemed to be ethnically caucasian. The only non-caucasian characters seem to be the Egyptians and the Ethiopian man who Phillip met on the road. This may not be an issue for readers, but if you are looking for an illustrated Bible that more accurately reflects the ethnic makeup of the Middle East and ancient world, I would recommend the Jesus Storybook Bible.

So who would God’s Good News be perfect for? I would recommend it for a young reader who is developing the habit of daily devotions. That could be a 5 year old being read to or a 7 year old who is learning to read on their own. This devotional will help build a lifelong habit of reading – and learning – the Scriptures.
