The Choice is Yours

Choose. This is a word most of us like. If you asked most people, they would tell you they want the freedom to make their own choices. God in His sovereignty has given us that freedom. The problem for most of us is we don’t understand the vital significance of our choices. These choices don’t just impact us but also our descendants.

God has made it very clear in His Word that our choices have real consequences. I call these texts the “if, then” verses of scripture. God is extremely gracious to us as He reveals how He has created life to function for our flourishing. He often says, “If you do this . . . then I will do this.” God demands obedience to His Word that we might experience the blessings He desires to pour out upon His children.

Try as we may, we can’t prevent the if/then consequences. However, we can pretend they don’t exist or deny they are true, as the enemy, our flesh, and the world (James 3:15) tempt us to do. However, an honest person who examines the Scriptures and then genuinely examines his or her own life, as well as history, will be forced to conclude that God’s Word is true and never fails.

God put certain spiritual laws into place that are as sure as physical laws. We are all aware of the physical law of gravity. If I so choose, I can deny it exists and even sincerely believe I can defy it, but if I jump out of a ten-story building, the law of gravity will determine my outcome: death. God’s spiritual laws are as definite and undeniable as His physical laws. He has told us “the wages or payoff for sin is death” (Romans 6:23), yet so many people think they will “beat the system” or that God is so merciful that He will just overlook their sin.

Recently, my husband shared a message with our staff titled “The Law that Will Not Bend.” He taught on Galatians 6:7, which says, “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; whatever a man sows, that also will he reap.” This law is irrevocable and is profoundly impacting your life, whether you are aware of it or not. This is a truth that is intertwined in the warp and woof of life.

If you are generous, generosity will be given to you. If you are faithful to sow thoughts and words of encouragement, you will be encouraged. If you will ask the Lord to make you aware of your own actions and evaluate them in light of this truth, you will be awestruck at the implications for you and all those you influence.

Many people are frustrated because they are waiting for a harvest they didn’t plant. This expectation would be as ridiculous as me planting cactus seeds and expecting flowers to come up. I might be sincere and plant the seed just right in the right amount of fertilized soil. I can water the seeds and watch for them to grow, but it does not matter how sincere I am. If I planted cactus, I will get cactus.

If you are planting negativity, you will reap negativity. If you are selfish, you will not reap generosity. Jesus said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). Many of the words of Christ seem backward to the natural man. God’s truth is not backward; the world is! Satan has so twisted and perverted the Word of God to appeal to our sin nature that many of us are unable to discern the truths from the lies.

You can be sure the Creator has given us the truths we need to navigate our way to Him. Build your life on the truth of God’s Word. By choosing obedience, you are choosing Christ. To choose Christ is to choose wisdom. You will reap the seeds of wisdom you have sown, and so will your descendants (Deut. 30:19-20). Choose wisely, and you will live fully!
